The Minister of the Constitution of Somaliland, Abdinasir Hassan Buni, has accused Somalia of deliberately escalating tensions and “beating the drums of war” between the Horn African nations. The accusation comes at a time when diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Somalia have been strained over Somaliland’s recognition, with ongoing disputes over territorial claims and airspace control.
Speaking at a press conference in the capital city of Hargeisa, the Minister of the Constitution, Abdinasir Buni, expressed deep concern over recent actions and statements emanating from the government of Somalia. The minister asserted that Somalia’s behavior is not conducive to fostering peace and stability in the region, raising fears of a potential military confrontation.
The accusations are rooted in a series of events, including inflammatory rhetoric from the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and other officials, and increased recruitment of Al-Shabab as the President of Somalia called a Jihad against the Somaliland and Ethiopia deal. The Minister of the Constitution emphasized that Somaliland remains committed to completing the agreements on development and security and is committed to seeking resolution through dialogue and international mediation.
“The actions and statements coming from the failed government of Somalia indicate a troubling shift towards aggression and hostility, and Somalia become a chaotic state in the Horn Africa,” declared Buni “We believe that Somalia tried every thinkable scenario to destabilize Somaliland’s peace and development; they called for al-Shabaab militants to attack Somaliland and Ethiopia after Somaliland and Ethiopia signed the MoU. Somaliland calls the Horn African nation strengths their relation on peace and development but Somalia seems to be choosing a different path, one that puts the entire region at risk. “
Somaliland is rightful to sign an agreement with any country, and its agreement with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia does not differ from the one we have with the UAE and Somalia itself. To receive our rightful international recognition as an independent nation is the priority of our government, Buni added.
The Minister of the Constitution urged the international community to take note of Somalia’s actions and called for diplomatic pressure to prevent further escalation and to consider Somalia a chaos-founder state in the Horn of Africa.
The accusation comes amid reports of increased Somalia’s aggression against Somaliland and heightening concerns about the potential for conflict. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with several nations expressing their commitment to supporting peaceful resolution efforts.
Regional bodies, including the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), were called to de-escalate the tension and conduct diplomatic dialogue, and Somalia’s president is on a state visit to Cairo to seek military help against the Somaliland and Ethiopian deal.
As the situation unfolds, there is a growing sense of urgency to prevent further deterioration of relations between Somaliland, Ethiopia, and Somalia. The international community’s role in facilitating dialogue and encouraging a peaceful resolution is increasingly crucial to averting a potential crisis in the Horn of Africa.
